Suggestions For The Future

While current Fleet Battle is a great game, I would like to see it become the best.

In this I would like to see if it's possible for players to specify not just a new size of the board, but the number of ships, what ships they are, and even create some new ones. Such as suppose one custom created ship is 3x3 and is a perfect cross-hatch "X." This does not yet exist and would definitely make it more challenging to find on the board.

Allowing players to build and develop their own custom scenarios, boards, and ships (perhaps within a 7x7 field), AND to have the computer player work within those additions or changes would definitely make for a game that would have a lifetime of interest and use - and always keep the brain busy and entertained.

. . .

The other idea I have is a bit simpler and really only for use with human players. An option for "COVERT."

Covert, if accepted by your human opponent means that both them and you will never see a shot or a location in the water if they hit the water instead of one of your ships.

The reason is simple. Some people use a specific method of hunting down enemy ships and they may want to jealously guard their hunting method so it is not readily apparent to their opponent.

Naturally the player who hits water can see it on their own board so they know not to choose that square again.

The game would function no differently showing where shots hit on opponent ships - except shots in the water will not be known or seen to either player. The game would continue as normal until all opponent ships are sunk.

Covert would be an option that by default is turned off even if starting a new game - and it must be an agreed upon method of military engagement before the game would begin and use it.

. . .

Thanks for the feedback Craig!

We actually worked on this a few years back, but decided not to continue to pursue this. Why? Well, mainly because it has a string of consequences that would need us to rework the game a lot. Things like saving the statistics on the server for custom games for example. Might not sound like much, but it is complicated, hard to implement and prone to errors. Also the interface work. Imagine having to show a 15x15 grid on a small device. Stuff like that...and if you offer a player something, you would need it to be 100%. If we add grids samller than 10x10 only, people would ask for bigger ones. We could implement the above without stats, but then players would ask us to add statistics for their custom games etc.

Don't get me wrong, all of that would be possible. But it would mean that we couldn't work on many of the other things we implemented and changed over the years. As it is, maintaining the game is already a lot of work for a 2 man company (and we currently work on re releasing some of our older games also).

Ok, so basically players would have to depend more on their memory to remember where they have shot. And players would never know the "shot pattern" the other player prefers, right?

Hi Giaco:

Nope, my name isn't Craig. It's David. But that's fine.

I didn't explain it right. Let me see. No the COVERT option would show all your own shots normally on the enemy page, however you could not see a shot from the enemy on YOUR page if it hit water, so there would be no way for YOU to learn the pattern they are using to hit your ships. And vice-versa. Of course you could see any shot that hits your ships. Instead a message would appear, "Covert: Your opponent hit water."

An added addition "Super Covert" could mean that you get the message "Super Covert: Your opponent hit one of your ships." and would not show it unless it was the final PIP for it to sink it entirely.

These are unusual options but I think they could be added I think with little difficulty and would make the game that much more challenging for those who want an especially brain-bending game.

For instance, without Covert you will know you are playing against me because I start in the center and work my way outward like a Chess Knight. I always play the hard difficulty level and unless the computer is incredibly lucky I usually win with this method.

I've also noticed many human players hitting the 4-corners of the map first. It is for this reason I now never have my ships touch those edges.

Were I playing against a human though with the COVERT option enabled, I would never have seen this, nor would they see I am following a Chess Knight in my moves and makes it that much more challenging to play.

Hallo Giaco:

Nein, mein Name ist nicht Craig. Es ist David. Aber das ist in Ordnung.

Ich habe es nicht richtig erklärt. Lass mich sehen.

Nope, my name isn't Craig. It's David. But that's fine.

Sorry, my fault.

Don't know why I thought you would be Craig. :-)I didn't explain it right. Let me see. Ok, makes sense. I will add it to our todo list. But no promise as to when and if we add it.
